Take Up Your Mat and Walk
This week’s message from John 5 reminds us that our salvation is the greatest miracle we’ve ever experienced, yet it’s easy to grow complacent — to miss the power of what Jesus has already done in our lives.
In this passage, Jesus heals a man who had been paralyzed for 38 years. Instead of celebrating the miracle, the religious leaders focus on the 'rules' broken. Their spiritual blindness caused them to miss the movement of God right before their eyes.
As Ian challenged us: “Our salvation itself is a miracle. Look for the miracle, then go out and witness.”
Discussion Questions:
1. In John 5, the man by the pool had been waiting 38 years for healing. What do you think kept him waiting so long—and what might that reveal about the ways we can become spiritually complacent?
2. Jesus asked the man, “Do you want to get well?” (v. 6). How might that same question apply to our spiritual lives today? What areas might Jesus be inviting you to move from comfort to transformation?
3. After the man was healed, he didn’t immediately recognize Jesus. How can we be more aware of the “miracles” of grace and salvation God has already done in our lives?
4. When we realize what Jesus has done for us, how can we more boldly share that story with others? What holds us back from proclaiming our faith openly?
5. Jesus later tells the man, “Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you” (v. 14). How does that reminder challenge us to live differently after experiencing the miracle of salvation—and avoid slipping back into spiritual complacency?
