Great Disciples: Relationship Before Reach

What if the biggest mistake in following Jesus is doing too much too soon? It is easy to focus on action while overlooking the foundation that actually gives it meaning. The call to make disciples begins with something deeper. Loving God and loving others is not secondary but the starting point of real discipleship. In the end, it is not what we do that proves who we follow, but how we love.

Jesus connects loving God and loving others as the greatest commandments. Which of those feels more natural to you right now, and which one feels more challenging? Why?


When you think about your current faith rhythms, where do you see a tendency to prioritize doing for God over simply loving God and others? What might that reveal about your heart?


Looking at the description of love in 1 Corinthians 13:4–7, which quality stood out to you the most and why? Where do you sense the Holy Spirit inviting you to grow?


Think of a recent interaction with someone who was difficult, inconvenient, or different from you. How did you respond, and what might it look like to respond differently in a way that reflects Christ’s love?
